Jobs available, Art degrees required!

Many times parents and students alike, may not see the value of an art curriculum or degree.  However, we have seen a shift in education with the implementation of 21st Century Skills and the rise of "Creating" to the top of Bloom's Taxonomy.  Along with that shift, we are seeing a growing demand for designers in the West Michigan Area.  Now more than ever, Art needs to be a part of a student's learning.  Businesses are looking for employees who are imaginative and creative.   We have to give students the opportunity to generate ideas, allow those ideas to take form, and finally evaluate and present their ideas.  In doing so, we are preparing them for a job market where they are willing try new things and take risks.  Art gives students the opportunity to develop skills and take risks, these experiences lead them closer to becoming the next generation of innovators.

Here is a great article given to me by my principal, Rick Frens, on the growing design-related job market in West Michigan.  West Michigan has always been an area for design, especially when you think of some of the companies in our area.  We have Herman Miller and Haworth, to name just a few.  An Art background and degree is needed for these jobs, isn't it time we start looking at Art in a new way?
